Every year, the National Association for College Admission Counseling conducts a “State of College Admissions” survey. And every year, respondents say the most influential factor in admissions decisions is a high school student’s achievement in their college prep courses.
Applying to college is not simply a matter of finding the right academic match. Admissions directors are looking for well-rounded students. They want to know if you have a range of interests and if you seem likely to be a good personal fit within their college’s particular environment.
Two important aspects of measuring your high school academic achievement for college admissions officers are your grade point average (GPA) and your scores on standardized college admissions tests such as the ACT and SAT. If you are strong academically, you can also pursue membership in honor societies to add recognition for your scholarly abilities.
Naturally your academic achievements and potential are of fundamental importance when it comes to applying to college. But college admissions officers are looking for more than a GPA and test scores. They want to know what kind of person you are, because attending college is about expanding your horizons and becoming a better “you” as well as eventually pursuing a career.
